  • A Frightening Account of the Effects of Global Warming
    Author : Rolf Joho

The term global warming is used to describe an increase the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere Global warming has been an important issue for some time now, but only became truly serious as of a few years ago Due to pollution, greenhouse gases and various other causes, global warming is now a major concern as scientists are saying that due to the dramatic climate change we could basically be expecting an end of days It is important to be aware of the effects of global warming and how the effects of global warming are causing problems The effects of global warming are no joke

We all are hearing about global warming now more than ever before and this is no surprise We see it in movies and hear about it on the news all the time That just goes to show how major an issue this is and how seriously we should all be taking it Often you even see celebrities on television who are talking about global warming and who are trying to use their celebrity to influence people and let them know how serious this is

The effects of global warming are astounding, and it is important for all people to be aware of the effects of global warming and how they impact not only themselves but the rest of the world as well The effects of this natural disaster are truly alarming and for people who are not sure what global warming is all about, it is important that they make themselves aware

What are the Most Noticeable Effects?

Of all the most noticeable and major effects of global warming, one is the spread of disease No one likes to think about getting a disease and getting sick, but the fact of the matter is that the way things are going now, as northern countries get warmer, disease carrying insects migrate north As they do, they are bringing plague and disease with them and so especially if you are someone that lives in the north you are going to need to be aware of this and be prepared

This is something that no one expected remember, and so scientists are not yet up to date in terms of vaccines and other medicines that are going to necessarily be able to protect people from this sort of disease

Of course one of the most talked about effects of global warming has to do with the ice caps melting If you see movies like The Day After Tomorrow which basically revolves around the topic of global warming, you will see that this is one of the major parts of the plot The reason that this is such a substantial effect of global warming is because if the polar ice caps were to melt, the entire earth would basically be gone First it would raise sea levels and then it would throw the entire global ecosystem out of balance

As a result, the ocean will be made less salty and fish and other sea creatures are going to suffer because their living conditions are going to be changed dramatically It will also endanger certain species of animals, and not only that but global warming could snowball even further if the ice caps were to melt These are just a few of the most dramatic effects of global warming that you should be aware of

Remember, there are so many different things that we can all do in order to stop pollution and hopefully global warming as well When you go to the supermarket to get groceries instead of using plastic bags which are not recyclable you can take a backpack or some cloth bags and you can use these instead There are also hybrid cars that you can drive and which help by not polluting These are great ideas on what you can do to help fight against global warming

Rolf Joho is a writer with many various interests and he owns several websites on a variety of topics. Some great resources for you would be to visit http://whatcausesglobalwarming.net/
  • 81st Infantry Division of the United States Army Wore the First Shoulder Sleeve Insignia
    Author : Earl Keaton

The first United States Army shoulder sleeve insignia was worn by members of the 81st Infantry Division This is an important aspect from an insignia collectors viewpoint This unit trained at Camp Jackson, South Carolina Being that Camp Jackson was located on Wildcat Creek the wildcat was chosen to represent the divisions insignia in May of 1918 In September of 1918 the division was preparing to disembark to France, as a member of the Inspector General s Department questioned that division Why were all personnel wearing an insignia with a wildcat on their left sleeve?

The commander of the division explained the meaning of the wildcat insignia and this began the road of approval for shoulder sleeve insignia for the United States Army

One could say, shoulder sleeve insignia has a 2 fold purpose or meaning The meaning of shoulder sleeve insignia may be a personal one To many, it may just be another item of the required uniform, but to some soldiers it is something very different A unique insignia embodying a proud, personal sense of participation in his organization, depicting the historic past of which he attaches great pride and honor Insignia meant, strength, will, pride, a belonging, and with this it became the norm for Military Uniforms worldwide

Soon, after approval of the wildcat Insignia, from the headquarters of the American Expeditionary Force, other divisions began wearing shoulder sleeve insignia The insignia patches or badges also caught the publics eye The shoulder insignia were featured in a number of magazines, including the December 1919 issue of the National Geographic To ensure that the unique insignia worn by the Army were manufactured authentically, a distinctive insignia painting, and a manufactured drawing were furnished by the commander on a loan basis These items were then made available to the Insignia manufacturer The samples were Inspected by Quality Control to ensure they had the correct color, design, and detail After the samples were approved the commander of the organization would place the order with the approved manufacturer, only Orders could be continually placed with the approved manufacturer, but if the manufacturer changed, the entire process would have to be repeated

The wildcat insignia ended up using 7 different colors Each color represented seven different divisions Shoulder sleeve insignia usually serve as unit insignia Unit insignia generally has a short history Meaning, the size of the Army expands during war, and gets smaller during peace This causes the Unit Insignia to be created and then discontinued Modern shoulder sleeve insignia were used during the first World War, inter war period, and the Second World War where a large number of new insignia designs were implemented

U S Military insignia collectors in over 30 different countries have come to Saunders Insignia for collecting We have also supplied museums and American unit enactors in several countries with the items they need to advance their programs We have supplied veterans families, active military individuals, active military units, and have provisioned several movies with the appropriate U S Army insignia

Saunders Insignia has been providing military insignia, law enforcement patches, and custom made insignia for 41 years to veterans, and collectors. Each and every patch has a history, a story, and someone who wore it with pride. Earl Keaton http://SaundersInsignia.com USN reserve four years
  • Animals Facing Extinction In 2010
    Author : Nathan Martyn

In 2004 there was a determination that over fifteen thousand species of plants and animals on the planet were facing extinction The reasons for this are varied, but the primary factor has become humanity s reckless destruction of their local habitats and the global eco sphere There are many well known animals on the list to go extinct as early as the year 2010

The african elephant is a well known creature to people around the world Despite the ban on hunting them in many countries, ivory poaching still exists and their numbers dwindle rapidly The four known varieties of asian elephant: Indian, Ceylon, Sumatran, and Malaysian, have lost half their population in the last few generations

Several species of whale are doing far worse than even the elephant The right whale has no more than two hundred and fifty fully adult members of its species left alive At least twenty percent of their population continues to die off with every generation The blue whale, largest animal species to ever live on the earth, has continued to loose half it s population over the last few generations

A smaller whale species, topping out at a mere eighty feet in length compared to the eighty two feet length of the blue whale, is the fin whale This gentle sea creature has faced a drop in population similar to its cousin species

One creature that no one would mistake is the gorilla This sociable and gentle creature can weigh up to six hundred pounds and stand erect at over six feet in height Sadly, due to the destruction of its habitat it has lost over half its population in only the last three generation

As far as the great predator species go, there are several that people easily recognize facing extinction in only another generation or two The cheetah and the Florida cougar

The cheetah is on the endangered species list, but there is one breed most people do not know of The species of cheetah known as the asiatic has reached a critical population point and without extreme measures to aid its survival it will go extinct shortly There are only fifty known members of this species left in the world They live in Iran

The Florida cougar, also known as the Florida puma or Florida panther, has an estimated mature population of fifty adult individuals efforts to Recover the population are now in place to retain the current current number of native panthers in the area Even with great funding, this is a hard agenda, as the cougar needs contiguous locations for habitat Every breeding family, forming one male and two to five females, needs 200 square miles of living habitat A group of 240 panthers needs 8,000 to 12,000 square miles of habitat and sufficient diversity to avoid inbreeding due to a small population size Many areas of Southern Florida are quick developing, and decreasing habitat threatens this animal

Without immediate action these well known species will die, and be lost forever in our own lifetime

  • Paper Products and Green Living
    Author : David Kraft

Some of the environmental issues that arise from paper production and disposal include the pollution of air and water, high energy use, large landfill requirements and deforestation To keep the impact on the environment to a minimum we need to change the ways in which we view paper products and begin to reuse and recycle these produces more in an environmentally safe manner Some of these ways include the use of reusable grocery bags, buying products made from recycled paper, and using cloth towels and napkins instead of paper versions

In order to have a smaller environmental impact with paper products, we need to begin by reducing our use of them (obviously!) and reusing products whenever possible Instead of reaching for the roll of paper towels to clean up a spill, why not use a dish towel? Or, instead of using a fresh piece of paper to write your grocery list, start using the back of a receipt or the back of and envelope that a piece of mail comes in These all seem like minor things, but the impact of doing them all, or the impact that could be effected if we all did one of them, can be pretty profound

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, paper made up the largest share of municipal solid waste in 2006 at 34 While about half of paper waste is recovered for recycling or compost, the other half ends up in landfills, where it does not readily decompose Recycling alone is also not a cure all; the recycling process as well as production from virgin pulp uses water, energy and chemicals According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), paper mills use 40 less energy to produce paper from recycled material than from fresh lumber, but may use more fossil fuels for recycled paper than for that made from virgin fiber According to the EIA, recycling also uses fewer chemicals than ordinary paper production, and naturally does not pose the same threat to forests While recycling paper that we can no longer reuse and purchasing recycled paper products can lighten our ecological footprint, reducing and reusing should not be forgotten Investing in durable reusable bags can help us remember to avoid paper bags when shopping

Have you thought about the chemicals that are used in paper products that have been bleached and their impact on the environment? Bleached paper items are done with Chlorine, which can cause dioxin, a highly toxic chemical that can cause cancer and birth defects in humans Paper mills release these chemicals along with other pollutants, such as sulphur oxides and carbon monoxide into our waterways through effluent polluting, contaminating our water and the organisms that live in these waterways, possibly poisoning humans Paper mills are the largest industrial polluters in North America By using reusable grocery bags over paper or plastic bags, we will be helping to minimize the impact on the environment that is created through the paper production process

Finally, we can t forget about the fact that making fresh paper requires the harvesting of millions of acres of forest (trees) every year Deforestation causes a number of problems It destroys animal habitats, putting species at risk for extinction It reduces the amount of carbon dioxide that can be turned in to oxygen which increases the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere This in turn can contribute to global warming Finally, actually cutting down the tress, shipping them to mills, and so on consumes a large amount of fossil fuels and generates an unnecessary amount of pollution According to the Environmental Defense Fund, over one third of the wood harvested in the United States is solely for the production of paper products Again, we can lessen these impacts by recycling paper products, using recycled products, and beginning to use less paper products in general

David Kraft writes a number of articles about green living and eco-friendly products. Learn more about the benefits of reusable shopping bags at http://www.reusablebagsdepot.com
  • The Mom and Pops Are Standing Strong
    Author : James Barry

The current recession has been a struggle for global industries and manufacturing, without a doubt We ve seen the down turn of the automotive industry, a faction that no one ever imagined could possibly crumble The economy has taken a toll on big business and corporations, and the names we thought we could always rely on have been in the news touting signs of trouble and despair

Nevertheless, in Canada, the little guys are holding on tight

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce recently reported that small and medium sized businesses in Canada (known as SME s), have shown surprising resilience in the face of this recession CIBC economist Benjamin Tal did some research and discovered that while the big boys had a ten percent decrease in employment, their smaller competitors showed no such job cuts, and maintained relatively the same number of employees Furthermore, the report indicates that small business bankruptcies are actually down year over year for the period to July 2009 Down, in fact, by just over 6 percent

Canadian small business has consumer loyalty to thank for helping them weather the economic storm Of course, it s the nature of smaller businesses to be grateful and show their appreciation, which in turn, keeps those same consumers loyal

By standard of practice, smaller businesses have less people doing more work to keep budgets in line, while their larger counterparts look at wages first when it comes to reducing expenses While small business might lower the hours of some employees to tighten the belt, they still need the same staffing level to run effectively Multi tasking is part of the job in small business

The trend of small and medium sized businesses resisting the negative effects of the recession is expected to continue While the strength of the Canadian dollar is hurtful to many large companies, smaller businesses don t feel the sting quite so dramatically In fact, three out of four Canadian small businesses are not impacted by the current status of the loonie at all

Small business in Canada has always been a staple of our economy It s only in the last couple decades that we have seen the insurgence of jumbo corporations and retailers make a home within our borders From grocery stores, flower shops and hardware stores to the corner convenience stores, Canadian small businesses proudly stand among the giants, defiantly refusing to wither away In Canada, we all know at least one person who is self employed Furthermore, the growing embrace of the World Wide Web has brought new life to Canadian manufacturers of everything from eco friendly cleaning supplies to flags and yes, even kitchen sinks

Mr Tal also states that Canadian small business will continue to play an increasingly important role [in the Canadian economy] That s likely an understatement, since throughout the history of Canada, it has always been the Mom & Pop shops, the print and press shops, the bakers, the hairdressers, the mechanics, the independents and the franchisees who hang tough, who lend a helping hand to their neighbours, and receive the same when the time is due In a country that s built on small towns, small business is a way of life
